DONCASTER ST LEGER 1842 | |||
The 67th winner of the St Leger, held on Tuesday 13th September 1842 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Blue Bonnet, a bay filly by Touchstone out of Maid of Melrose, owned by the 13th Earl of Eglinton, trained at Brecongill, Middleham by Tom Dawson and ridden by Tommy Lye. A field of 17 runners contested the race, although there were 134 subscriptions of 50 sovereigns each, which was worth 6700 sovereigns. The value to the winner was £3,600. Bill Scott set a tremendous pace at the outset, building a clear lead, but at the mile post he began to come back to his field. Fireaway then took up the running until the Red House, after which Blue Bonnet made her move and shot to the front with 2 furlongs to go.
